Nigel Edward C Molyneux

It saddens me greatly to report the passing of our former President, Ted Molyneux. Ted was hospitalised in December with minor heart problems. Sadly, shortly after Christmas and days prior to his potential release, he contracted the Covid bug which finally took him from us. Due to current group restrictions, a private funeral is to be held at Dorking Cemetery later this month. Ted was a long term, enthusiastic supporter of our Club financially, also a Team shooter and coach. We anticipate holding a Club gathering at Bisley once permitted in honour of Ted and due notice will be given. A fully detailed obituary is being formulated for inclusion in the NRA Journal.

Armoury Access
Today, we completed the upgrade of our Armoury security. This means that our new Fob system is active, and the old swipe cards will no longer gain you access to the armoury. This is a really exciting upgrade to our facilities. For any queries, please contact the secretary.

Our Club Chairman Richard Gardiner passed away in June 2020. In Richard’s memory, his widow Kay has arranged for a trophy for a shooting competition. For 2021, this will be a separate shoot with Kay joining us to present the trophy, and we will have a small celebration in his memory. Further details will follow, but targets have been reserved for Saturday June 26th 2021, so please put this date in your diary now.

Club Championships
Captain Pat Hunt has been able to reserve targets on the 18th and 19th September 2021 (For those involved previously, Pat has ensured manual targets at long range for these dates), so again please pop those in your diary.

Club Chairman Richard Gardiner.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Club Chairman Richard Gardiner on Wednesday 24th June. He had a short illness.

Richard was such a huge part of the City and will be sorely missed. As Chairman, he was so proactive about supporting the City and bringing the club forwards in terms of increasing membership and ensuring stability of the club. Richard was an active shooter with the club too, and in 2019 had become an A class finishing 132nd in the Grand Aggregate, and captaining our City team to 5th place in the Imperial 150th Match.

In his memory, we plan to host a shoot in 2021, and hold a gathering to celebrate his life as due to Covid restrictions his funeral was a very small affair.

2020 City RC Combined Open Meeting.

It will perhaps be no surprise, given the unprecedented times we find ourselves in, that the decision has been taken to cancel the planned Combined Open Meeting due to be held on 6th & 7th June. Various options will be considered in due course including to possibility to  run the competitions concurrently with the planned ‘Post- coronavirus’ meeting planned by the NRA.
Further details will follow in due course

COVID 19 (Coronavirus)

The Council of the City Rifle Club have been considering what action we should be taking for the Club over the last week and particularly in the last 24 hours given the Government’s advice yesterday covering the attendance of Pubs, Clubs, Restaurants etc.
The Council, as you will appreciate, have a responsibility to do everything possible to protect our staff, members and visitors.

After discussions with the President and a number of Council Members today, it has been agreed the most appropriate response is to keep the City RC Clubhouse closed for the foreseeable future. Armoury access will remain unchanged but members are reminded to follow NHS England guidance on handwashing/sanitising.

The City Combined Open Championships are planned to take place on 6th & 7th June this year and a decision on this event will be taken next month given updates on the spread of the virus and measures to mitigate the risk are being updated almost by the day.

I will of course keep you updated on any further developments.
We are living in unprecedented times so keep safe and healthy!

Richard H. Gardiner
Chairman

Otto Weber

It is with great sadness that I advise of the passing of Otto “The Duke” Weber a longstanding member and more recently an honorary member of the Club. Otto died on Saturday 16th November, following cancer of the oesophagus.
Given the option of further prolonged, uncomfortable treatment, Otto chose to let nature take its course and passed away in his sleep. His loving, caring wife Evelyn was by his side.
Otto was a true gentleman and serious competitive shooter on firing points around the globe, mainly Bisley, Canada and California. Otto was a member of the 1974 USA Palma Team.
He will I sure be remembered not only for his shooting achievements over so many years but also for great companionship both on and off the range and his dry humour.

Our thoughts go to Evelyn, his family and friends.

10th March 2019

Format of 2019 Combined Open Meeting .

After discussion it has been agreed to retain the existing planned dates (7th/8th Sept) and use the 5 Electronic Targets available. It has proved impossible to find an alternative date that did not clash with other major events or where range capacity was available.

The format of the Long Range Competitions for 2019 will therefore be:

  • Changed from 2 & 15 to 2 & 10. To ensure all competitors complete within timescale.
  • Introduce String Shooting. Still squad competitors 3 to a target on 2 details but introduce system were #1 Shoots, #2 Register & times, #3 sets up.  Then #3 shoots, #1 Register & Times, #2 sets up etc.
  • Introduce strict timing of shooting a string of 2 sighers and 10 to count of 16 minutes (This is in accordance to ICFRA rule 12 for string shooting at Long Range).
  • This would permit a maximum capacity of 30 competitors for the 2 Long range Competitions.

The view is that by introducing ‘string’ shooting the vast majority of issues raised in 2018 will be resolved.

15th February 2019

13th January 2019

City Combined Open meeting 2019.

Due to the ever increasing number of targets used by the European F Class Championships the number of targets available have been reducing year on year for the two Long Range Competitions held on the Sunday morning of the Open Meeting, held traditionally on the second weekend of September.

In 2018 the Long Range competitions were shot on 5 Electronic Targets and views from the competitors were somewhat mixed.

The indications for 2019 is that we will once again have use of all five electronic target on Stickledown on the Sunday.

As we move into 2019 we would be grateful for your views to assist the City Rifle Club in planning this years Open Meeting and a brief survey has been constructed and sent to all entrants over the last 3 years. A summary of the results will be published on the Club website  early in February.

Once we have the views these will be considered by the Council of the City RC and representatives of the Hertfordshire RA and RNTRC.
